To teach the beauty of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as a catalyst for personal growth and building community bonds.
Pinnacle BJJ was founded in 2021. What began as a room with mats on West Bell Road has become the training home for families, first responders, veterans, competitors and a lot of people who had never considered a martial art until the week they walked in.
We are affiliated with Ares BJJ, so our curriculum, our standards and the belts we award sit inside a recognised lineage rather than being invented in-house. We are also a partner academy of the We Defy Foundation, which funds training for disabled combat veterans, and an ESA Approved Vendor with the Arizona Department of Education.
The gym is deliberately unglamorous about progress. There is no fast track, no purchased belt, and no expectation that you compete. Some members are chasing IBJJF podiums; most are here because an hour on the mat is the only hour of the day nothing else can reach them.
What we do insist on is how people treat each other. The four values further down aren’t decoration — they are the actual terms of training here, and they get enforced.
New to BJJ? Start hereA martial art of leverage, not force.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a grappling art — take-downs, positional control, joint locks and other submissions. There is no striking. The whole discipline is built on the premise that position and leverage beat size and strength, which is why a well-trained smaller person can control a much larger one.
Beyond self-defense, the practice supports you in managing stress while cultivating patience, problem-solving, discipline, humility, confidence and mental toughness.
- No striking
- Grappling only
- Leverage
- Beats size & strength
- All ages
- Kids through adults
- Free
- Your first session
- Self-defense
- Skills that work standing and on the ground, tested against a resisting partner every session — control without needing to hurt anyone.
- Conditioning
- Strength, mobility and cardio as a by-product. Nobody counts reps at you, and you feel the progress within weeks.
- Problem-solving
- A physical puzzle that pushes back — patience, timing and decision-making under load. Why people call it human chess.
- Presence
- An hour nothing else can reach you. Stress you chose, on your terms, and the forgotten skill of being in the moment.
“I’m not fit enough / young enough / tough enough”
Every one of those sentences has been said at our front desk, and none of them turned out to be true. You get fit by training, not before it. Our mats hold teenagers and people in their sixties in the same class, and the toughest thing you’ll be asked to do on day one is tap when you should.
Stress in life is categorical. Inevitable. How we respond to stress is a choice. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu continues to train my mind to be calm in high-stress situations.Prof. Ken “Doc” Ota
